And how do they know this? Well, the Hebrews were moving as an extremely large group of people. Along the way, they left their mark, so to speak. Inscriptions have been found along this path. Inscriptions that could have been made by one group of people only...

Here is a rock with inscriptions on it. These inscriptions were a combination of ancient Hebrew and ancient Egyptian!

And here they found more inscriptions. Notice the Hebrew menorah inscribed on the rock in the upper right picture! Eventually, these inscriptions led them to a very special mountain...

Notice that the top of the mountain behind these people is black...

Exo 19:16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
Exo 19:17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.
Exo 19:18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
Exo 19:19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.
Exo 19:20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up
to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

So, here we can see that God came down on the mountain and the top of the mountain burned with fire. This would certainly have blackened it!
